Freedom concert to reveal rising stars

Lao Music EventThe Indee Freedom Concert III will give up-and-coming singers who have no affiliation with a record company the chance to hit the stage and show their talents at the National Culture Hall on Thursday April 9.

Many promising new bands and singers have applied to take part, but Indee Records has had to make a selection of the best performers due to time constraints.

Indee Records President Anoulack Pathammavong said yesterday the studio wanted to stage all the applicants, but the time available meant only eight they considered the best performers could be included in the line-up.

The concert aims to promote modern Lao music to local and foreign listeners. The studio organised two previous concerts at the National Culture Hall in 2004 and 2006, giving audiences a night of entertainment from some of the best music acts around.

This concert will be a bit different because the studio will clear the way for budding bands and songsters to make their faces and voices known.

“They are a new generation of artists and have produced their own material. Now we want the public to see how good they are so they are no longer hidden talents. Their work is of a good standard – whatever foreign singers can do today, our new singers can do the same thing just as well,” Anoulack said.

The concert will also feature popular singers who work with the studio, such as The Cells, LOG, Sam, Modern Dance, Over Dance, Kimmy, Nalin, Aluna and Souk.

“It will be a free concert and we hope enjoy will have a great time, enjoying some well-established acts and rising stars ahead of the Lao New Year holiday next week,” Anoulack said.

The Cells' vocalist, Athisack Rattanavong, said the band was determined to rock the hall and get people jumping around and singing along with them. He was confident the concert would be a lot more fun than previous Freedom concerts.

He said the concert series hadn't staged a performance for a long time because the studio had been busy organising events for businesses in Vientiane and the provinces. “We hadn't have time to set up a concert in the last few years, but I promise we'll hold concerts every year from now on.”

Thursday's concert will get going at 4pm and will feature eight new bands, including some hard rock acts.
